DR. RAFAEL MATOS

Dr. Rafael Matos is a dynamic Afro-Latino educator and communications specialist. Born in Puerto Rico to Dominican parents, his journey from the vibrant streets of the South Bronx to the academic halls of prestigious institutions has shaped his unique perspective on leadership, communication and learning and development.

He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Southern California, and his Ph.D. in Communication Media and Instructional Technology from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Matos combines his academic insights with real-world experience to deliver impactful results.

Having worked in diverse college settings, from small liberal arts institutions to large public universities, Dr. Matos has honed his ability to connect with audiences and engage them in critical conversations. He then transitioned to non-profit management, focusing on membership engagement and development in dues-driven organizations. He currently is also a faculty member at Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism, Media, and Integrated Marketing Communications. There he teaches undergraduate and graduate students how to leverage data and consumer insights to create strategic messaging for various marketplaces.

Dr. Matos’s approach to his work is rooted in the exploration of intersectional identities through personal narrative. His style blends the laid-back attitude of Los Angeles with the directness of New York City, resulting in a unique “gentle tough love” approach that empowers those around him.
